Applying for a UK marriage visa (also known as the UK spouse visa) requires submitting a detailed collection of documents to prove your identity, relationship, finances and living arrangements. The Home Office is very strict about documentation, and missing or incorrect evidence is one of the most common reasons for refusal. Preparing the right documents from the start can make your application much smoother and increase your chances of success.
Identity and Personal Documents
To begin your application, you must provide documents that confirm who you are and your personal background. These include your current passport, any previous passports, your birth certificate, and your marriage certificate. If your marriage certificate is not in English, you must include a certified translation. If you or your partner were previously married, divorce decrees or death certificates must also be submitted.
English Language Requirement
Most applicants must show they meet the English language requirement by passing an approved Secure English Language Test at A1 level. The certificate must be from a UKVI-approved provider. Applicants who are nationals of majority English-speaking countries or who hold a qualifying degree taught in English may be exempt.
Relationship Evidence
You must provide evidence that your relationship is genuine and ongoing. This can include photographs together, communication records such as messages or call logs, travel stamps, boarding passes, or letters from family and friends who know your relationship. A personal statement from you and a sponsor letter from your partner also help explain your relationship history.
Financial Evidence
The financial requirement must be met using the exact documents listed in Appendix FM-SE of the Immigration Rules. For employed applicants, this includes six months of payslips, six months of bank statements, and an employer letter confirming employment details. Self-employed applicants must provide tax returns and business accounts. If you are relying on savings, you must provide six months of bank statements showing the full required amount has been held continuously. All financial paperwork must cover the correct time periods and meet the Home Office’s specific format.
Accommodation Documents
The Home Office must be satisfied that you will have suitable accommodation in the UK. You may need to provide a tenancy agreement, mortgage statement, or a letter from a person who will host you. Many applicants also include a property inspection report to show that the home is not overcrowded.
Medical and Background Documents
Depending on your country of residence, you may be required to submit a tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from an approved clinic. Some applicants may also need to provide police clearance certificates to show their criminal record history.
Statements and Cover Letters
Including a cover letter from the UK sponsor and a personal statement from the applicant helps clarify your circumstances, relationship history, future plans, and how you meet the visa requirements. These letters allow you to give context to your documents and explain anything unusual.
