You must prove English language ability at CEFR Level A1 (speaking and listening) unless you qualify for an exemption.
Take an Approved English Test
Approved tests:
- IELTS for UKVI (Life Skills A1)
- LanguageCert International ESOL SELT
- Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE)
What to do:
- Check if you’re exempt (national of English-speaking country or have qualifying degree)
- If not exempt, book a test at an approved SELT center
- Take the speaking and listening test at A1 level minimum
- Receive your certificate (valid for 2 years)
- Store the original certificate safely—you’ll need it for your application
Exemptions
You don’t need a test if:
- You’re a national of a majority English-speaking country (USA, Canada, Australia, etc.)
- You have a degree taught in English (requires NARIC confirmation)
- You’re over 65 years old
- You have a long-term physical or mental condition preventing you from taking the test
What to do:
- If claiming degree exemption, obtain NARIC UK statement of comparability
- If claiming medical exemption, get a letter from a doctor or medical professional
Step 5: Secure Accommodation Evidence
Prove that adequate accommodation is available in the UK without overcrowding.
Determine Accommodation Type
Options:
- Property owned by sponsor
- Rented accommodation
- Living with family or friends
Collect Accommodation Documents
If sponsor owns property:
- Mortgage statement or deed
- Council tax bill

If renting:
- Current tenancy agreement
- Landlord permission letter (if only sponsor named on lease)
- Recent rent receipts
If living with others:
- Property owner’s letter confirming you can live there
- Owner’s proof of ownership or tenancy
- Property inspection report or floor plan showing number of rooms
What to do:
- Verify accommodation meets UK room standards (not overcrowded)
- Calculate how many people will live in the property
- Ensure you have at least one bedroom for the couple
- Obtain written permission from landlord or property owner if necessary
- Take photographs of the property interior
- Request or create a floor plan showing room layout
